Two broad types of automatic wash

Automatic washes generally fall into touchless systems and friction systems. Touchless equipment uses water pressure and cleaning chemistry without rotating cloth or brush material contacting the vehicle. Friction washes use soft material or other moving wash media to physically loosen dirt.

Touchless: strengths and limitations

A touchless wash eliminates physical wash media touching the paint, which can be attractive for drivers concerned about surface contact. Its cleaning ability depends heavily on chemistry, water pressure and how contaminated the vehicle is. Heavier bonded grime may remain after a single cycle.

Friction: strengths and limitations

Physical contact can improve removal of road film and some stubborn dirt. The tradeoff is that the condition and cleanliness of the wash media matter. A well-maintained modern system and a poorly maintained one should not be treated as equivalent simply because both use friction.

Before entering an automatic wash

• Check posted restrictions for roof racks, antennas, bike carriers and aftermarket accessories.
• Close windows and sunroof and retract mirrors if instructed.
• Know whether the conveyor requires neutral, brakes off or another specific procedure.
• Inspect loose trim, damaged paint or vulnerable accessories beforehand.

What an automatic wash may not replace

An automatic exterior wash does not substitute for interior cleaning, paint correction, stain extraction or detailed work around intricate wheels and trim. It is best understood as a maintenance tool rather than a complete restoration service.
