Detailing is not simply a more expensive car wash

A routine wash focuses on cleaning. Detailing may add decontamination, correction and protection, along with more intensive interior work. The scope varies widely, so two services using the word “detail” may include very different labour and products.

Exterior detailing stages

Decontamination

After washing, bonded contamination can remain on paint. Detailers may use chemical decontamination, clay media or other processes to prepare the surface for polishing or protection.

Paint correction

Machine polishing can reduce the appearance of some swirls, oxidation and light defects by refining the clear coat. It is not the same as repainting, and aggressive correction is not appropriate for every finish.

Protection

Waxes, sealants and ceramic-style coatings differ in application, durability, maintenance and price. Ask what product is actually being used, what preparation is included, and what aftercare is required.

Interior detailing

Interior work may include vacuuming, steam cleaning, extraction, stain treatment, leather or vinyl cleaning, glass cleaning and odour treatment. Different surfaces require different chemistry, so a single “all-purpose” approach is not ideal for every material.

How to compare detailing quotes

• Ask whether the quote is based on vehicle size and current condition.
• Confirm which correction or protection steps are included.
• Ask whether pet hair, severe stains, biohazards or heavy contamination carry extra charges.
• Request realistic expectations for scratches, stains and odours that may not be fully removable.
